Aroma ARC-733-1NGR 3-Cup Pot Style Rice Cooker, Red Review

Aroma ARC-733-1NGR 3-Cup Pot Style Rice Cooker, RedGreat compact size for dorm room, but unless stirred near the end, the rice consistently gets brown on the bottom.I'm deciding about returning it - I find that I actually like the browned, sweet bottom. It seems that the rice boils harder and puts out more steam than other rice cookers I've had.

Oster 4724 20-Cup Rice Cooker, Stainless Steel Review

Oster 4724 20-Cup Rice Cooker, Stainless SteelWe have been trying to switch to a healthier carb lifestyle so I finally had to break down and buy a rice cooker for cooking my wild rice. This rice cooker does an excellent job of cooking our wild rice when you follow the package directions of 1 cup wild rice to 4 cups liquid (we use Bob's Red Mill rice).Wild rice takes forever to cook (about 1 hour for a cup of uncooked rice). This rice cooker is great because now I can put it all in and walk away instead of having to stick close to the stove/oven.I haven't used this cooker to make any other type of rice, but given it's performance with our rice I'd have to guess it would do an equally excellent job with other types of rice.

I bought this rice cooker last year and have only used it a few times, so I couldn't speak to it's longevity/durability.

Aroma ARC-960SB 10-Cup Cool Touch Digital Programmable Rice Cooker, Stainless Review

Aroma ARC-960SB 10-Cup Cool Touch Digital Programmable Rice Cooker, StainlessAt home we have a rice cooker on which we spent over $150.I am on an assignment away from home for a few months and wanted to find a rice cooker.I specifically wanted a rice cooker with delay function, so that when I get off work the rice is ready.

Pros:Cheap compared to rice cookers with similar functions. The cheapest rice cooker with delay function is over $80.This one is only $50.The rice cooker works pretty well as far as I can tell (I have been eating rice all my life).

Cons:The details are not as good as some of the more expensive brands. For example: the cord is not retractable; there is no rice paddle holder on the rice cooker so you will have to put it somewhere else; the paint of the plastic sticker showing 15 hours sticks to the rice cooker even after you remove the sticker (this must happen a lot - I don't know what their QC people are doing).None of these affects the functions of the rice cooker. But it just appears that the manufactorer does not pay much attention to the details.

Overall it is a good value. If you are looking for a rice cooker with delay function and are not willing to spend a lot of money on it, I recommend this rice cooker. If you are a person attentive to details and easily irritated by annoyance, you may want to spend more money buy a name brand.

Regarding the reviewer left rice warm for two days: no food should be left warm for two days -- the food will go bad no matter how good your rice cooker is.I typically keep extra cooked rice in the fridge and then microwave it before meals.

Zojirushi NS-PC18 Electric 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-PC18 Electric 10-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerUsing a rice cooker should be easy - otherwise, why plunk down the money for it? This Zojirushi is user-friendly only after some experimentation since the manual contains almost no information about how to use it. However, since I've finally found the right procedure (as I'll share later), I've been pleased with its performance.

First, some background. I have a Zojirushi NHS-10 that worked beautifully from the start, but after a year of use, started spitting and gurgling starchy water all over the counter. With that kind of mess, I was afraid to cook larger amounts of rice, so I bought this model as a replacement. I liked that the top latched and that the vent hole had a shallow well around it to catch expelled water. I had loved the quality of rice that the less expensive model cooked, so I stayed with the same brand.

My first attempt with this model resulted in the same gooey mess as with my old model - and I was furious. After several phone calls to relatives who also owned this model, I discovered that you MUST use the measurements provided by the plastic measuring cup and inside the non-stick pan. (Because I found that the plastic cup is not really a full cup of rice and was used to a one cup rice to two cups water ratio, I had used my own measuring cup.) For every Zojirushi plastic cup measurement, fill to the corresponding water mark inside the pan. Fill the pan with water to the correct level AFTER adding the rice.

Rinse rice twice before cooking if you want to avoid slight browning on the bottom. Allow fifteen minutes after the machine changes from cook to warm for additional steaming and fluffier rice. How do you cook brown rice? Not a clue. Brown rice requires longer cooking time and therefore more water. My old Zojirushi came with a small manual that provided rice/water ratios for several varieties, but this arrived with almost no instruction. I suggest experimenting with brown and wild rice before counting on it for company.

The pan for this model is huge, and you must use at least two cups of dry rice. The size stated on the box is misleading, as two to ten cups refers to uncooked, not cooked, quantities; rice doubles in size when cooked. Although it's not practical for a small family, larger families and frequent rice eaters will appreciate its generous capacity. Cleaning is slightly more complicated (though hardly time-consuming) than with less expensive Zojirushi models since the steam valve at the top should be rinsed free of accumulated starch between uses. (One relative rarely rinses the valve, however, and has no problems.) The non-stick pan cleans easily, although care must be used not to scratch the surface. The cord wraps around the bottom for storage. The unit itself is surprisingly light-weight given its appearance, making it easy to remove from even high cupboards.

I have mixed feelings about this rice cooker, as I prefer the results of the less expensive model. However, the overall design of this cooker, with its latched lid, larger steam hole, and "dew" catcher (to collect condensation when the cooker is left on warm for prolonged periods), is better, especially if you intend to leave the rice on warm for an extended time. The biggest drawback of this model is the lack of instruction for users unfamiliar with rice cookers.

Three stars right out of the box, four stars once you adapt.

Panasonic SR-3NA-S Rice Cooker Review

Panasonic SR-3NA-S Rice CookerAlthough I've only owned this cooker for a lil over a month, I feel qualified to speak to it's usefulness.A bit pricey for the capacity, it's effectiveness can't be overstated.Forfamily of 3 or less this cooker makes plenty of rice.I especially like that it can make one serving of rice fairly quickly. No fancy electronics, just a plain timed cooker.Mix the rice and water (or stock), flip the switch and when it turns off you have perfect rice.I found domestic packaged rice like Uncle Ben's to need proportions of 1:1 water to rice.Imported sticky rice from India or Asia needs a lil less water, like .8:1.You'll find the proportions you need.I hope this cooker lasts longer than at least one reviewer claimed.Once outside the warranty period, if the timer fails (I'm sure it uses a simple bi-metal timer), I just wire in a cheap electronic timer from Radio Shack.

Fagor 670040230 Stainless-Steel 3-in-1 6-Quart Multi-Cooker Review

Fagor 670040230 Stainless-Steel 3-in-1 6-Quart Multi-CookerI purchased this to replace five slow cookers (Yes, I really had five), a rice cooker, and a Nesco roaster. When it arrived, I ran a water test which worked perfectly. The cooker heats quickly and then cooks on pressure and beeps when done.If not turned off, it goes to a warm cycle to hold the dish until you are ready. The next dish I tried was rice on the rice cycle. It is set for white rice and I was cooking brown rice so I just repeated the cycle twice after the first cycle. The rice turned out perfectly in 18 minutes. The removable pan is easy to clean since it is Teflon.I then put in the ingredients for black beans and set the timer for 27 minutes on the high pressure cycle.I punched start and walked away. The beans were done, tender and delicious! It used to take me 12 hours to cook beans in the crock pot! There is a brown cycle which heats up fast and can be used for sauteing items. I made a Mexican chicken soup and sauteed the onions and celery, threw in cubed raw chicken breast and browned, then added the rest of the ingredients for the soup except for the avocado which I added after the soup was done and cooked it on high pressure for 8 minutes. It sure didn't take me long to cook lunch that day! There is also a low pressure cycle for vegetables which I haven't tried yet. I can see that I am going to get lots of use out of this cooker.I think it is wonderful!

For peace of mind, the unit's self-locking lid comes with an automatic pressure-release setting, which means the lid won't open until all the pressure inside gets safely released. In slow-cooker mode, the appliance can be used to make delicious pot roasts, soups, and stews. Cuisinart CRC-800 8-Cup Rice Cooker Review

Cuisinart CRC-800 8-Cup Rice CookerAfter purchasing this unit, I too had spill over at very low water rice levels. I realized that this is the same problem one would get, using even medium heat to cook grits, or rice in a regular pot.......

(If you leave the top of the pot down tight.)

There is no way, because of the high heat setting of this unit, that the glass lid supplied can be used to completely cover the cooking pot, even though the instruction book indicates so..The hole would have to be much larger to allow steam to escape.

The temperature setting of the heating dictates the designer set it high to allow the use of the steaming attachment, using a high boiling point

The steam will push the oxygen mols from the pot causing a very low barometric air pressure.

With this the bubbles generated by the boiling rice water will have almost no air pressure to keep them low or at minimum.{ they expand greaty), Thus foaming out the sides of the pot.

Even though I could not find in the instruction that the glass top would not work if it was used to completely cover the cooker top while cooking, the picture on the box was a clue.

The picture shows the steamer unit sitting in place, with the glass lid on top.

Using the steamer attachment, 2 measures of rice using plastic, and 2 1/3 cups of water using a measuring cup, I started the unit.

A few bubbles and steam came up through the bottom of the steamer, for a while, and than decreased. ( no boil over ). Once the temperature in the unit exceeded 220 degrees ( all water boiled off) : the unit went into stand-by.

Perfectly cooked rice.Every time

I use the steamer unit, even if I not even steaming vegetable or etc.No boil over. It has many holes in it to allow steam excapement with out
boil over.Caution........... The steamer tray gets as hot as the steam generated in the cooking process.

Do not touch the steamer tray attachment with-out waiting for it to cool, and keep this unit well away from the reach of children, or uncovered,
un-protected hands. In this cooling time the "laden" heat in the left over steam can return to the rice, and complete the cooking cycle.

If the water is allowed to boil out, burnt rice at the bottom.

The directions are in error,Check it out, Happy riceing

Sanyo EC-503 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Vegetable Steamer, White Review

Sanyo EC-503 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Vegetable Steamer, WhiteI must say this is my first cooker, and I chose a small one since I'm single. I found it handy to have the meal ready and warm when I come home for lunch breaks (I live close to the office), or in the evenings, when I'm tired and don't feel like cooking. The cooker has a cook mode and a "keep warm" - once the cooking is done it switches to the latter and the warm food awaits you to arrive home!

I found the instructions regarding how much water to use (depending on rice quantity) to be a little on the low side - the rice I got was somewhat dry for my taste. I also used it to cook other grains - quinoa and millet (BTW, the I millet I get with the cooker is thebest I've tasted so far). Learning from the rice experience, I now put more water, actually I use more water than if I would cook in a pot!
If you stick to the grains/water proportions, you have no problem with making a mess in the kitchen. If you use (much) more water, you might see the lid and the area around the cooker becoming a little stained, as in steam/water which dried and left some stains. For me this is not an issue - I want a good food first, kitchen comes after. Actually, you might not even see that - it's such a minor issue - but if you do, then you just need to use less water. In my experience, this doesn't happen with rice, but other grains (notably millet) swell a lot more during cooking. The instructions (and the web) say that it is possible to cook other dishes (stews, etc.) using the cooker, but haven't done that yet.

This cooker doesn't have an on-off button, you need to plug and unplug it from the outlet. This is a non-issue for me, but "your mileage msy vary". I guess this can actually work to your advantage: if you are really cheap, you can get an appliance device which you can program so that the cooking starts - say - about 40 minutes before you get home, and thus you save electricity money on the "keeping warm" time. This is also possible to do with smarter cookers, but they cost $70+ more.

Zojirushi NP-GBC05 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating System Review

Zojirushi NP-GBC05 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating SystemI recently purchased this product from an Amazon merchant and love it! Since I've started incorporating more whole grains into my diet, and being a rice-lover, this item appealed to me from all I'd read, and the GABA rice setting is what really sold me. I've successfully used it to cook Lundberg short grain brown rice on the GABA setting, hulled barley on the GABA setting, organic millet, and whole oats on the GABA setting. There aren't instructions that specifically direct you as to how to cook these particular grains using this product, and the barley I cooked needs to have the amount of water I used the first time tweaked for perfection, but I'm really excited about having the use of this rice cooker for other whole grains. I intend to try whole buckwheat next. One thing that is very nice about using this gadget is that there is no wasting of water lost to steam from over-boiling in order to thoroughly cook these grains. I highly recommend this product for people, like me, who dedicate a large portion of their dietary needs to whole grain consumption... just experiment with the amount of water until you get it just the way you like it, and remember that less water than you'd ordinarily use will probably work with this machine. You just add the grains and water, set it appropriately, and let it do its thing! It shuts itself off automatically at the end of its cooking cycle, and keeps the grains warm, moist and unburnt, until you're ready to eat them.

Panasonic SR-MS182 Fuzzy-Logic 10-Cup Rice Cooker, White Review

Panasonic SR-MS182 Fuzzy-Logic 10-Cup Rice Cooker, WhiteThis cooker is supposed to be able to: cook white rice (normal mode), white rice (quick mode), brown rice, sticky rice, rice porridge, steam, cake, slow cook. I tested the functions I would most often use: cooking white rice, steaming, cake, and slow cooking.

[1] Cook rice (white jasmine) in normal mode
This cooker is meant to make as little as 2 cups rice (4 cup yield cooked) to 10 cups (20 cup yield cooked). Cooking takes about 40 minutes. When cooking the minimum (2 cups) with the recommended amount of water according to the markings in the inner bowl, the finished rice seemed a bit dry and undercooked. Whenever I find the rice slightly undercooked for my taste when the machine says the rice is finished cooking, I let the rice steam for a few additional minutes in "warm" mode, and it'll usually eventually get cooked more thoroughly, though still a bit dry. I've had the same problem with my old rice cooker. With smaller amounts of rice, the markings are usually off so I need to add more water than what is recommended. I tried cooking 2 cups again, but this time, added water 1-2 millimeters above the recommended water line, and the rice came out perfect when the machine sounded the "ready" beep. When I made a larger amount in this cooker (4 cups), I added water only up to the recommended line, but this time had no problems with the finished rice. Again, this is the same way my old rice cooker (different brand) performed, so don't necessarily think badly of Panasonic's line, there are problems all around - just keep tweaking water as you get to understand how the rice will turn out the more you use the machine.

[2] Cook rice in quick mode
I tried with 2 cups again. Cooking finished in about 15 minutes, but was far more undercooked than the rice in Task 1. I let the rice steam in "warm" mode for about an hour, and the rice was better - took away the whole point of trying to cook rice quickly, though. Doubt I will bother using this over normal cooking.

[3] Steam
You can set the cooking time for steaming anywhere between 1-60 minutes, adjusting in 1 minute increments. The plastic steaming tray fits into the inner bowl of the rice cooker. The tray is approximately 8.25 inches in diameter and 2.25 inches deep. There are two nubs in the plastic tray protruding inwards that you use to help lift the tray out of the inner bowl when steaming is done. Steamed 4 quartered russet potatoes great, and tray was very easy to clean.

[4] Cake
Instead of cake, I made a batter for pumpkin bread that is normally baked at 350º for about 55 minutes in a loaf pan. Put it in the cooker on "cake" mode and it finished cooking in 55 minutes as well. Cooked nicely though the texture of the crust is slightly different and better suited for actual cakes. There will not be the golden crust on the top of the baked good you are used to with oven baking. The top of the cake/bread will look and feel more like steamed buns. You can set the cooking time in "cake" mode anywhere from 20-65 minutes, adjusting in 5 minute intervals.

[5] Slow cook
A completely frozen block of corned beef was cooked in "slow cook" mode for 3.5 hours. It was nice that I didn't have to worry about falling asleep with the machine on since there are no flames to deal with on the stove and didn't have to watch for spillovers. There is no temperature control, but the machine keeps the temperature so the water stays at a low simmer. Cooking times for slow cooking can be adjusted in 30 minute increments anywhere from 1-12 hours.

Happy with overall performance except for quick cooking rice.

Other notes:
The machine will remember the cooking time settings you last used for the steam, cake, and slow cook options - great so you don't have to reset it all the time when you cook the same thing often. A detail I really appreciated was that the inner cover to the lid had a rubber gasket around the edges with a layer of rubber folded back in such a way that when you open the lid, with all the condensation on the inner cover from the steaming of rice, the water is caught in the groove in between the layers of rubber and does not drip all over the bottom half of the machine. The machine displays the time when not in use, but it just operates on a 24-hour clock i.e. when it is 4 in the afternoon, you will see 16:00 on your time display. There is unfortunately no other option for those of us who like to simply see 4:00 pm. The display lays more horizontal than vertically. I wish the display were more vertical so you could easily see the time on it sitting down in a chair across the room, not only if you're standing over it. Disappointed there is no slot/holder for the rice scoop. It would have been nice since once the scoop starts getting used, there's rice sticking all over it and it would be good to have somewhere to put the scoop in between servings without having to dirty another dish or the countertop.

Sunpentown SC-886 3-Cup Stainless-Steel Rice Cooker and Steamer Review

Sunpentown SC-886 3-Cup Stainless-Steel Rice Cooker and SteamerWe enjoy white rice each and every day for as long as I can remember and we have waited a long time for an 3-4 cup rice cooker that utilized a non-coated stainless inner steam pot. For the past two years Sunpentown's competitor's 8 cup stainless cooker has been our mainstay and though it has been a nice unit it was always an effort to clean the stainless pot and learned that soaking it with soapy water for 30 minutes was very helpful, but still two of us didn't require such a large cooker. By chance I happened to hear of the Sunpentown 3 cup rice cooker at a reasonable price and maintained it included a stainless steel inner cooking pot. I ordered one from Amazon and was so dissapointed after reading the opinion/review that the inner pot was or could be coated with some type of non-stick coating so I e-mailed Sunpentown asking if this was or wasn't true. Within an hour I received a cordial letter informing me that all of the inner cooking components were indeed stainless steel and were never coated with any PTFE or other non-stick coating. After receiving the cooker we enjoyed 3 cups of great tasting rice and because the pot sits in 1 cup of water the extreme temperature to the bottom of the inner pot is minimized and the rice is cooked evenly. We still soak the cooking pot for a short time but it is not necessary and cleaning is very easy. Thank you Sunpentown for developing exactly the right rice cooker this family wanted.

Zojirushi NSRNC-18A Automatic Rice Cooker and Warmer with Floral Imprint Review

Zojirushi NSRNC-18A Automatic Rice Cooker and Warmer with Floral ImprintGrowing up in an Asian family, we weren't about to mess around with cheap crumby rice cookers. The Zojirushi 10 cups through the years have kept me well fed for 25 years. If you treat it well (i.e. no metal on the nonstick), they'll last forever. If you don't eat rice every day or don't have a large family, this unit might be overkill. You may think about a 4 or 5 cup. You can, of course, buy this one too. My mom owns 3 rice cookers. If you ever go to an Asian food market, you'll see that practically every rice cooker comes in floral print. I don't trust a rice cooker without flowers on the side. =)
PRO:
Easy perfect rice every time
Can feed a small army
Comes with everything except rice and water
Will last forever with a little care
Floral print
CON:
Not for people living alone
You need to know how to make rice
Kinda pricy, but worth it if you eat a lot of rice

Panasonic SR-MS102 Fuzzy-Logic 5-Cup Rice Cooker, White Review

Panasonic SR-MS102 Fuzzy-Logic 5-Cup Rice Cooker, WhiteThis rice cooker is fantastic. I bought and kept this (and returned the others) after trying this along with two other rice cookers - Zojirushi NP-HBC10 and Sanyo ECJ-HC55S. Please note that I had selected even the other two after much research and they, in their own place, are amongst the best rice cookers that you can buy.

This one cooks rice as well as or better than the others and much faster. I use this mainly to cook brown rice - the Sanyo took about 90 minutes for two cups of brown rice, the Zojirushi took about (or more than) 100 minutes and this one takes just 60 - 65 minutes.

This one has more functions than any other cooker (Rice cooker, steamer, slow cooker, warmer, porridge maker, cake maker, sushi and more).

This one looks the best by far and its Menu and LCD are better than the others. This has a fantastically stylish smooth body with a super cool Orange LCD with Black LEDs with no ghost digits (prominent and clear black digits on Orange with no shadows from the unused digits - looks very cool and sophisticated). The colour scheme and over all look is by far the most modern and stylish.

The Panasonic while being the fastest, best looking and most feature packed machine as compared to the Zojirushis and Sanyos is the one that costs the least !

The steamer tray supplied with this is better that the Sanyo's as it is deeper and does not sit on the bottom of the inner pan (mess from the tray legs dipping in the boiling water in the Sanyo) but sits on the top rim of the inner pan and hangs, with sufficient clearance from the boiling water - this is important because close proximity to the boiling water amounts to greater loss of vitamins from the vegetables being steamed. The Zojirushi does not have a steamer tray or dedicated steaming function for that matter.

While the Zojirushi makes rice as well as any other machine and it has the proclaimed GABA brown rice setting, it is exorbitantly priced and takes much longer to cook. The Sanyo is priced closer to this one but the Panasonic's design, looks (style, very good LCD and colour scheme and buttons), performance (cooking time and quality of the brown rice) pleased me much more than the Sanyo's. Panasonic's electronics is unparalleled - it is evident in the details like a much better LCD screen, best readability (and aesthetics) and this one remembers your last menu choice even after being powered off (unlike the others which reset to the 'White rice' option).

And, from researching on the net, I found that in general Panasonic rice cookers last much longer than any other brand.

So far I have only cooked brown rice in this and it came out fantastic every time. I am eager to try out the plethora of other options available on this rice cooker and go a bit further with my creativity which is made possible by the unmatched versatility of this wonderful piece of equipment.

One thing I would like to let prospective buyers know is that the inner lid on this one is aluminium (as is the Sanyo's). So, if avoiding aluminium cookware is high on your priority than this could be a concern. However, there is hardly any contact of the lid with the food and so it did not matter too much to me. The Zojirushi I bought was the top of the line amongst Zojirushis and was the only rice cooker I found which had a stainless steel (and not aluminium) inner lid.

Overall, this was a winner by far in terms of unbeatable value, top quality and dependability. It brings a smile on my face everyday due to its functionality and beauty. I highly recommend this rice cooker.

Panasonic SR-TEG18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Warmer/Steamer with Domed Lid Review

Panasonic SR-TEG18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Warmer/Steamer with Domed LidI was kind of skeptical in ordering this rice cooker because I have had a National Brand Rice Cooker for over 20+ years and it finally gave out. When I researched that Panasonic had bought out National, I thought that I would give it a try and I'm glad that I did. It cooks the rice perfectly and I like that it keeps the rice warm for up to 12 hours. It is very easy to use and cleaning is a breeze. This is the best purchase that I have made all year. I would highly recommend.

Progressive International Microwaveable Rice/Pasta Cooker Set Review

Progressive International Microwaveable Rice/Pasta Cooker SetI bought this product almost a yr ago. Its great for cooking in the dorms where your only appliance is a microwave. I couldnt eat the dorm food and this allowed me to cook pasta in my room. I wish i hadnt lost my package insert, that told me the cooking times for everything, so if anyone else goes out and buys this, do us all a favor and post it, eh?I liked that it gave cooking times for steaming veggies, pasta and rice; I LOVED how easy it was to clean. This is a MUST for any one going away to school, and makes a GREAT graduation gift.

Progressive International Microwaveable Rice Cooker Set Review

Progressive International Microwaveable Rice Cooker SetI bought this for one reason; so my buddy in the Army who is flying around in the desert can make himself and his crew a meal without them having to walk the damned mile from their quarters to the chow hall.

I researched microwavable rice cookers and this one fit the bill because of 1)price, 2)size (can fit in a very small microwave), and 3) capacity. It also provided good value because of the measuring cup and spoon provided.

I shipped this to Iraq (via USPS APO) along with some bags of Jasmine Rice, Pouches of Chicken breast meat, Cans of Coconut Milk and baby corn, an envelope of "Taste of Thai" peanut sauce mix, and my recipe for "Chicken and Baby Corn in peanut sauce over jasmine rice" (which as you might imagine involved mixing and heating everything but the rice, then dumping it over the rice.)

IT WAS A HUGE HIT, and it's not like these knuckleheads (I say that with all due fondness and respect) can cook. So bottom line, this thing would be perfect for a Soldier in the field or a college student in a dorm room.

Nordic Ware Microwave Rice Cooker 8 Cup Review

Nordic Ware Microwave Rice Cooker 8 CupAfter trying & returning several microwave rice cookers I decided to give this one a try because of the great price and Nordic Ware's reputation. You MUST follow Nordic Wares instructions for cooking rice.Using any other recipes/directions, will result in your rice being soggy & the water not absorbing. The one noticible difference between the other cookers I tried and this one is that I didn't have to clean my microwave after using this rice cooker.NO SPILLS & OVERFLOWS!I just ordered a second cooker to place in storage just in case this model is discontinued.GREAT PRODUCT AT A GREAT PRICE!

Sanyo ECJ-D100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker/Steamer, White with Stainless Accent Review

Sanyo ECJ-D100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker/Steamer, White with Stainless AccentThis is a review from a family for whom rice is a staple food (rice is cooked in the house every day). The only variety used though is white rice (long grain). We bought this about 6 months ago - wanted to gain some experience before posting a review about it. During this time this cooker has been used about 180 times (once a day). There are different methods of cooking rice: a) microwave, b) pressure cooker, c) boiling rice in a vessel in an electric/gas countertop oven. The key to getting rice cooked in the consistency desired (the family prefers fluffy) is the ratio of water to rice, regardless of method used. This holds true for the Sanyo electric cooker also. This optimum water/rice ratio varies with the variety of rice used (even among the long grain white rice varieties). The marked measurements in the cooker are a guide only - and will not get the desired result all the time. Keeping this in mind, I will start with my biggest gripe:

a) I fail to understand what all the fuzzy logic, micro computerized technology does to improve the process of rice cooking. This was evidenced by the fact that the cooked rice was no different from the earlier $15 B$D rice cooker it replaced. There is a timer - which turns off based on some preset logic, but this logic certainly is NOT based on cooked rice quality and consistency. Until technology reaches that level all this micro computer fuzzy logic mumbo jumbo is more marketing hype than reality.

b) Looks good: From the design aspect, it does look good, somewhat futuristic looking.

c) Easy to clean and maintain: some thought has gone into the component design, they are easy to clean and maintain.

d) The non-stick coating seems to be more scratch resistant than conventional. Again comparing with the B&D cooker this replaces, this is performing much better - we did not try scratching this with a knife to check this as one poster claimed - this is just everyday use.

e) Added feature of the steamer is quite helpful when steaming vegetables in addition to cooking rice is desired.

f) Price/Value: This rice cooker is expensive at $110. However, I wouldnt complain too much, if the inherent value of product compensates for it. As mentioned earlier, aside from aesthetics, general improvements there is no revolutionary advantage to this product over cheaper products. My main problem with the B&D cheapo cooker was longevity. It crapped out after 1 year. Given the price differential the Sanyo enjoys over that - almost 6 times, then the Sanyo cooker should last about 6 years. I am not ready to attest to this yet, as I am only 6 months into my ownership. If me, cooker, Amazon are still around, I will come back and update.

Bottomline: Works well, but pricey, I would be hesitant to recommend for the occasional rice eater.

Update (Nov 2007): One year now - absolutely no issues with once a day use so far. No scratches on the non-stick coating (we strictly use the spatula provided), easy to clean, and consistent cooked rice quality.

Update (Jan 2009): Two plus years now and still going strong. The non-stick coating has started to come off in places.

Product Description:
Enjoy healthy cooking prepared easily in this mult-function unit. Making rice, soup and steaming vegetables is easy as Sanyo has incorporated the latest in micro-computerized technology in this attractive cooker. Eliminate uneven cooking with the extra thick 3.5mm titanium coated inner pot that makes sure you get no cold or undercooked areas. Since the inner pot is thick, heat distribution is more even and remains constant throughout the cooking process. This results in food prepared as you expect. Multiple rices such as white, brown, rinse-free, mixed, sweet, sprouted brown and the Korean specialty dish Dol Sot Bi Bim Bab are started simply by locating the water level marked on the inner pot for each type of rice, pouring water to the correct marking, selecting the type of rice by pushing the menu key and pushing the start button. Doesn't get much easier than that! In addition, the menu key has settings for slow cook (soups and stews), porridge, steaming and quick cooking. The multi-language instruction manual (English, Chinese, Korean, Japanese) with recipes is easily understood and guides you through the different cooking operations. A unique steaming tray is included that allows not only preparation of vegetables but incorporates the ability to steam eggs. Want your food ready after a hard day at the office? Preset your food to cook up to 24 hours ahead of time with the LCD clock/timer. Running a little late even though you have your food timed? An automatic keep warm function will make sure prepared food is kept at its optimum heat level for up to 12 hours. Easy cleanup is managed with the non-stick inner pot and removable steam vent. A retractable cord and carrying handle make it convenient to bring the food right to your dining area. Aroma Professional Rice Cooker/food Steamer Multiple Cooking Functions (2-20 Cups of Cooked Rice) Review

Aroma Professional Rice Cooker/food Steamer Multiple Cooking FunctionsI picked this cooker up from Costco for under thirty bucks. If you don't want to spend a lot on a computerized rice cooker, this is the one for you. It's the cheapest fuzzy logic rice cooker on the market, but still makes great rice. It doesn't have a bunch of extra functions you'd never use, just white rice, brown rice, quick rice, and steam cook.

You have to play around a little with the amount of water when cooking the rice. If it's too dry, just add a little bit more water and leave it in keep warm mode for about 15 minutes. If you're planning on using keep warm mode, you also have to add a bit more water to keep the rice from burning to the bottom.

I've used mine for everything from steaming veggies to making steel cut oats. One thing I particularly like is that when you set the timer for steaming, it doesn't start counting down until the water is actually boiling.

The only thing I'd like better was if there were extra internal bowls available. I had originally bought this one thinking to use it until I got a more expensive rice cooker, but that purchase has been put on hold indefinitely simply because this one works so well.

To make steel cut oats, I use the brown rice function due to the long soaking time. Just add 4 cups water to every 1 cup of oats. Also add pat of butter or a bit of oil to the water to keep it from boiling over, and a pinch of salt. You can add raisins or other dried fruit if you like. I usually make a double batch, and it comes out perfect every time. Perfectly cooked with that unique chewy steel cut oat texture. No more soaking and making it on the stove for me.

Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice Cooker Review

Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice CookerThis machine is designed to give baseline service in a rice cooker. It uses a designand technology over 15+ years old.For the amount of money being charged you might want to consider getting a machine that at least has a retractable cord.
On the plus side - the pan heats well and is teflon coated; does white long grain and Japanese medium and short grain very well.
Be aware that the water markings on the interior of the pan correspond to cooking Japanese rice which uses a different ratio of rice to water than other varieties such as, wehani or short grain brown.
This machine has to be played with to do shorter grain varieties of brown. It can handle long grain brown fine.
I would make the suggestion of looking at (all) the rice cookers there and find one that has the following things for the money:
1) stainless steel pan or aluminium pan lined with teflon; 2) retractable cord; 3) warming function;
An on/off switch is NOT standard on an Asian rice cooker. It is due to the fact that in Japan and Australia there is an on/off switch right in the wall plug area. The manufacturers did not take into account that Americans with their different outlet styles would be rice junkies (silly them).
Do not cook anything less than a cup or try for more than 3 cups.Too little rice cooked comes out a bit odd while too much means your pot lid will pop up due to too much steam.
Oh yeah, that's another thing - the lid can make noise due to the steam lifting it during the cooking process (bubbling pot lid kind of stuff). It is not dangerous so don't freak from the noise.
This machine is fine for the dorm or home. But do examine the cost of the machine, the amount of rice you eat and the cost of the machine to features.
This machine is good but it is not great.

Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Model ME81 (Formerly ME8) - by Miracle Exclusives Review

Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Model ME81 - by Miracle ExclusivesWe cook rice and grains frequently, as do many Asian-Americans. We have used plastic-bowl microwave vessels, aluminum & teflon pots, steam pressure cookers and several others over the past five plus decades. They all work, but each has a down side. For instance wait till your visitors or grand kids hear the hissing monster of a pressure cooker.

We feared aluminum toxicity, teflon ingestion, plastic leaching and plain uncertainty of what new epidemiologic research will unleash on us tomorrow. My wife and I have conveniently labeled our failing intellects as chronic "rice-in" toxicity. Forget age, it must be all that peeling cooking pot and rice!

The stainless steel Miracle is a reasonable answer, unless we find out in some distant future that stainless steel is also a hazard. Probably not. This cooker performs well and passes muster readily with us. We have not noted any spills or crusty rice paste sticking to the bottom. We do have the advantage of having cooked rice and grains for many years. But this is an easy skill to acquire if you learn to vary the amount of water used to suit the type of rice or grain.Don't lose heart too soon.

The pot washes easily if you soak it in water for a few hours -- and better still leave it overnight for your spouse to take care of tomorrow!

A vege tray comes with the cooker. It steams beans, peas and carrots well and to a ready-to-eat tender state.

I agree that a price of some $50.00 would have been better, but the convenience and safety are worth the added whimper while you pay the price. You could shop around and may be able to find a slightly lower price. And don't blow the savings on pricey coffee.

Zojirushi NS-RNC10 Automatic 5.5-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-RNC10 Automatic 5.5-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerThe Zojirushi cooker (both our old and this new one) does a splendid job cooking white and brown rice to the right consistency if properly prepared. The stay warm feature is great! We can cook a full pot of rice and leave it in the cooker for a couple of days and it stays warm and fresh.[Of course, you need to be careful to use common sense precautions to make sure you don't cause an environment where bacteria breed (i.e., like using unclean serving utensils).]The price may seem a little steep, but since we will use it nearly every day for years (like to old one), it's well worth the price.

We had used a 10 cup Zojirushi rice cooker/warmer for about four years until I damaged the nonstick liner by rinsing rice in it (oops!).When I contacted the company to see about getting a replacement liner, I was told it was $50 plus shipping! After an internet search, I found this 5.5 cup Zojirushi for a nominal amount more money.

We eat a lot of rice - almost daily, but honestly, a 5.5 cup cooker is just the right size for a family of 4 to 6.(We had never made 10 full cups of uncooked rice in the old cooker.)My mom's the connoisseur of rice brands - her rice always comes out perfect each time. Also over the many years she's cooked rice - what use to take some time and constant watching on the stove to get the perfect rice, the cooker/warmer does very efficiently without the worry of burning the rice.

As additional info for those who don't cook much rice, we use to cook white rice but now we cook brown rice.Took getting use to the switch to brown rice, but now we prefer it.We soak the brown rice for about 1/2 to 2 hours in water before cooking it and add a little more water than for white rice.(I believe the recipe that comes with the cooker says this.)It's not as difficult as I'm probably making it out. And, finally, you want to make sure you don't use metal utensils, abrasive cleaners, or abrasive scouring pads in the non-stick liner (or wash your rice in it!) to prolong its life.

Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Micom 3-Cup Electric Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Micom 3-Cup Electric Rice Cooker and WarmerI did a lot of research prior to choosing the Zojirushi rice cooker and luckily for me by the time I was ready to purchase the company had come out with this model NS-VGC05 which is very compact and perfect for one person or even two.It does an amazing job of cooking the rice to perfection. The instructions were easy to follow especially for being a novice.I am anxious to try the different settings for different rices and cakes.I called the company to find out about the built in clock. The instructions did not explain whether you have to have the unit plugged in to recharge the clock. The answer is that you do not have to have it plugged in.It is a lithium battery that has a 5-6 year life and then you would call the company directly to have it replaced.
The clean up was really easy again by following the instructions.I highly recommend this product. It is definitely worth the money paid!!!

Sanyo ECJN55F Electronic Rice Cooker & Steamer Review

Sanyo ECJN55F Electronic Rice Cooker & SteamerI love my rice cooker :) It's cute, it cooks rice wonderfully, it makes soup AND it comes with a food steamer insert. I haven't tried steaming yet but i can say that the rice & soups are fantastic!

I was doing so much research on rice cookers prior to buying this. I really wanted a great quality machine & was going to shell out big bucks for a zojirushi w/fuzzy logic. It seems everyone thinks they are the best. I noticed that their machines look VERY similar to Sanyo models. and i found some really good reviews for various sanyo rice cookers. This particular one wasn't rated but this machine essentially looks identical to one that was (only difference i could see was that this one has the cute design on it) So i figured i'd give this one a try. I am VERY happy with this machine.

I've made both white & brown rice Both came out perfect. With this rice cooker i have never had the problem of the burned/gummy layer on the bottom like the cheap-o rice cookers are prone to. The cook time has been accurate so I don't need to check on the rice although i like to anyway. Even though i know by now to trust the machine (i'm sure the rice won't overcook) i still like to check on it & stir it up a bit. Makes me feel like i'm actually cooking ;)

Tonight i made soup for the first time. (chicken & vegetable soup) it was delicious.i didn't even follow a recipe, i just winged it & threw in some cut up pre-cooked chicken, 4 cups of chicken broth, 2 medium diced potatos, a cup of cut up baby carrots, some celery, an onion, a little salt n pepper & a bay leaf, a small bit of ground rosemary & thyme. It came out so goodi couldn't believe it. The broth will cook down as it simmers over the hours. You will need to add some extra broth after a couple hours or your soup will turn into a thick stew. (Right after the soup is done it is REALLY REALLY hot so let it cool down a little before serving or switch the machine over to keep warm for a little bit first)

The "keep-warm" function works very well, it keeps the rice nice & hot. I've cooked rice & then had it sitting for about 30 minutes on keep warm. It stayed hot but didn't ruin the rice. No unwanted sogginess or overcooking. As for the soup, on keep warm it stayed hot enough to eat but not TOO hot.Oh, i've also used the keep-warm function to reheat leftover chicken & rice & it worked great. the food was moist & tender & nice & hot.

This machine comes with an instruction booklet, a plastic stirrer, a measure cup, & a food steaming insert. With the measure cup provided a full cup will make 2 decent size portions of rice. (I always use the measure cup provided. Not sure if it is actually a dry cup or not, i have't checked.) I wouldn't suggest cooking less than a full cup of rice at a time. If you do, expect a little extra clean up. I tried this one day when i wanted a small serving of rice just for myself. The rice actually tasted fine, but while cooking it crackled & pinged, rice ended up splattered & crusted onto the inside lid. This created unwanted extra clean up. Plus it's probably not great for the machine.

The inside compartment is removable & cleans very easily. It is non-stick, just rinse & gently wipe it out.I wouldn't scout it, you might ruin the finish. but you shouldn't need to, at least i never have needed to. The inside of the lid will probably need to be wiped clean as well. It gets dirty too, more so when making soup than the rice.but either way it wipes clean easily.

I really like that when i am checking on the rice during cooking I haven't gotten burned. (this i mention because i have a black & decker flavor scenter food steamer. I often get burned taking the lid off. it seems no matter how careful i try to be i still get burned once in a while by that thing.) There's a steam vent on top of the lid of the rice cooker which has a little cap over it. So it's not blowing scalding steam straight out in a geyser, and whenever i pass my hand over the vent i don't end up yelling & yanking my hand back from the pain. (unlike the darn black & decker steamer which seems designed to burn you)

The instruction booklet has the typical safety/product care information & some basic cooking instructions. There are some porridge/soup recipes. I wish it had more recipes or information on different things to cook, like steel cut oats.I plan on one day trying oats in this rice cooker. It might take some trial & error to get it right so i'm putting it off. but if i try it one day & find a formula that works well then i'll update my review with it. As i will about the veggie steaming if i ever try that out.

1/23/08 UPDATE:Still thrilled! I recently cooked quinoa & it came out perfect. And i've had no problems at all with my rice cooker, it works perfectly.:)

Aroma ARC-940SB Cool-Touch 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Food Steamer Review

Aroma ARC-940SB Cool-Touch 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Food SteamerI had researched several higher priced rice cookers (over $100) before buying this one. I came across it at Sam's Club ($30) and thought I should give it a try.I was skeptical at first, because most rice cookers in this price range received horrible reviews. However I was pleasantly surprised the first time I used it. It took 15 minutes or so to cook 3 cups of rice and it came our perfect, just like you would get from a good Chinese restaurant.I've never been able to cook rice like that before. It's great. It's also very easy to clean.

Sanyo ECJ-HC55H 5-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker, Grey Review

Sanyo ECJ-HC55H 5-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker, GreyI bought this model to replace my $12 reject rice cooker.Clearly, a hundred bucks does make a bit of a difference, the most obvious and pleasing of which is the thick, non-stick cooking vessel. There are two that come with this appliance, a rice cooker with graduations for different kinds of rice, and a slow cooker, both non-stick.No more soaking with soap and attacking the pan with a scouring pad after every batch of rice.Being an electronic rice cooker, the other noteworthy advantages over its cheapo predecessor are the timer function and truly hands-off operation, which translates into more food being prepared at home.If it costs $8-10 to buy a modest lunch, and perhaps a dollar or so to prepare one in the cooker (which is likely more nutritious anyway,) the savings quickly add up.Using a device like this to prepare meals really saves time.

So far, I've cooked several flawless batches of brown rice, a process that the manufacturer has made near-absolutely idiot-proof.There's no point going into detail here--just read and follow the instructions and you'll get a nicely-made batch.I also used the high slow-cook setting to prepare some buckwheat, which came out fine, but the quicker rice-cooking modes will work equally well on buckwheat or other grains with some experimentation.Dig around online to find recipes.I look forward to making some soups with this thing.

Construction is typical for the Sanyo brand: solid and refined.Zojirushi appears to be the favored brand in this category for whatever reason, but the cheaper Sanyo offerings have the same features and careful attention to detail.
