Zojirushi NS-WAC10 Micom Fuzzy-Logic 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-WAC10 Micom Fuzzy-Logic 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerI got this to replace a basic Panasonic rice cooker. Nothing wrong with the Panasonic's machinery, but the bowl's Teflon coating was damaged beyond repair. I decided to splurge on the Zojirushi because I thought the timer feature would be useful, which it is. I also like that it can make brown and sweet rice as well as white rice, and the white rice seems to come out with a better texture.

However, the Zojirushi is a hassle to clean: You have to not only wash the bowl, but also remove and wash the inner lining of the lid and then wipe down the inside of the lid itself (attached to the body) every time you use it. Not a huge burden, but annoying to someone who's used to just tossing the Panasonic's rice cooker lid in the dishwasher.

The Zojirushi's regular white rice setting also takes between 50-60 minutes to cook 2 cups of rice, as opposed to about 30 minutes for the Panasonic. The Zojirushi does have a quick cooking option that will cut the time to 30 minutes with no apparent loss of quality. However, as far as I can tell, it'll revert to the regular setting after it's done, so that you have to keep selecting the quick cooking option every time you want to use it as opposed to having it just sit there with quick cooking as the default. (Keep in mind, though, that this may be user error as I'm still learning how to use it.)

To sum up: Good rice, adequate controls, and fussy to clean. 4 stars.

Wolfgang Puck WPDRCR10 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Steamer Review

Wolfgang Puck WPDRCR10 10-Cup Rice Cooker and SteamerI have owned this cooker for just over one year.I rarely take time to write reviews because I usually have nothing significant to add. This time is different! I hope everyone reads what I have to say because their and their family's health depend upon it.What is also disturbing is that Wolfgang Puck's company could not care any less.

Upon receiving this rice cooker, I was shocked at the POOR QUALITY of the cooking pot itself, which is light-weight aluminum sprayed with a very thin, teflon-like coating to keep the rice from sticking. I usually only buy the very best cookware, and rarely buy any with a non-stick coating because it is well known that these coatings contain toxic substances that we can ingest as they break down.I bought this sight-unseen, though, because I was only going to be steaming food in it and I trusted this would be up to my high standards. After all, Wolfgang's "spiel" for this item includes these words:"... he brings that same (unparalleled) level of excellence to his own line of professional-quality cookware."If this is his idea of professional-quality cookware, I now think he must be an idiot - or a fraud. While I am not one who likes to complain, I called his company twice over the past year to discuss this problem.I got nowhere. They just do not care about design issues that can affect public health, so I decided to write about this problem instead.

As careful as I have been to use the special plastic spoon provided with the cooker to prevent scratching, the pot's toxic finish began to show marks of wear within two weeks of once-a-day use. A replacement pot that I recently began to use has shown the same undue wear.I see now it is a design problem. The cooking pot is one layer of thin aluminum with no extra layers at its bottom where it sits directly over a hot heating element.Although the element is covered, it obviously is not enough to protect the bottom of the pot from heating temperatures that cause the ultra-thin, non-stick coating to break down.It only breaks down at the bottom, not at the sides. Both cooking pots began to show wear and tear within just a couple of weeks of light daily use, and leaving food in it to keep it warm probably hastens the breakdown. The problem is not an aesthetic one. This breakdown of a toxic surface contaminates the food you eat and can lead to cancer and contribute to other health problems.

As I said above, I see no recourse but to throw the whole thing out. What good does it do to keep replacing a cooking pot that is simply not built to specs that can withstand sitting on top of its heating element? After going through two cooking pots in less than 6 months of usage, I believe it is fair to say that the coating on the pot is simply not heat-resistant enough to be safely used as instructed in this rice cooker.Shame on Wolfgang Puck for putting his name on it and misleading so many of us!

Sanyo ECJ-M100S Micro-Computerized 10-Cup Rice Cooker Review

Sanyo ECJ-M100S Micro-Computerized 10-Cup Rice CookerThis is a very new model which Amazon started selling only recently. I bought this over a month ago from a third party seller here.
Being a native rice eater, and having cooked rice flawlessly on the stove-top for years, I have always been very dismissive of these automatic rice cookers because they never lived up to the hype. Every rice cooker I had tried would brown the bottom layer of my rice, and I would have to simply throw the bottom half an inch of cooked rice into the sink.
Well, turns out that I had been wasting time & money over the wrong type of rice cooker. A friend recommended that I buy a fuzzy logic cooker. The concept was appealing, but the two hundred dollar tag was the deal-breaker.
While searching for another kitchen item, I stumbled upon this Sanyo model which claimed to deliver the same fuzzy logic technology for about half the price of the leading brand. And bought it on a whim.
Boy, am I glad! I have nothing but praise for this machine. I have cooked white basmati rice, brown basmati, brown short grain, quinoa, steel-cut oats, and bulghur wheat. Very very pleased, and highly recommend it. Remember, you have to stick with their suggested water proportions.
It also has the Bake option which I haven't tried yet, but apparently, it is a premium feature found in the high-end models. Sweet.
Cleaning up is a breeze as the steam vent detaches neatly. Despite having a large capacity (20 cups of cooked rice), It doesn't take up much counter space either due to its tall, round design.

So, to anyone that's been avoiding the fuzzy logic cookers because they are overpriced:go grab this affordable winner to create your before and after rice moment.

Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 10-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer, Premium White Review

Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 10-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer, Premium WhiteExcellent rice cooker. So far, I've used it for white and brown rice with and without the automatic timer and it works great. I'll use it for shushi next week. With the automatic timer feature you set up the machine and then tell the rice cooker the time of day when you want your rice to be ready. After that time it switches automatically into 'keep warm' mode so your rice is ready to eat in case you're delayed. This is one of the main reasons I bought this specific model.

A few things to note so you can make a more informed purchase.

1- Cup size is different.I guess a japanese cup is different than those used in the US.Therefore, 10 cups in this case actually translates to 7.5 US-sized cups of rice.

2- Cooking time is longer than 'normal'. I included the estimates for some types of rice straight from the manual. The zojirushi website also has estimates.
a- Quick cooking (only white rice): 35-45 min
b- White Rice: 51-60 min
c- Sushi rice: 47-58 mn
d- Brown rice: 82-108

3- The minimum amount of rice you can make with the 10 cup model is 1 cup except for sweet, mixed, and brown rice where the minimum is 2 cups. Mixed rice is one where you ad a few other ingredients that will cook together with the rice 9eg. soup stock, soy sauce). For the 5 cup the minimum you can make is 1 cup for all types of rice except porridge where you can make 0.5 cups.Again, these are the smaller cup sizes.

4- For those with small kitchens, the 10 cup machine has the following dims (WxDxH in inches): 11x14.2x9.4.The 5 cup is 10x13x8.1

Enjoy perfect rice every time. Spend your time preparing other parts of your meal.

Aroma ARC-914SBB 4-Cup Cool-Touch Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Review

Aroma ARC-914SBB 4-Cup Cool-Touch Stainless Steel Rice CookerNormally I've had good experience with the Aroma brand rice cookers, we have a 20cup version that happily makes perfect sticky rice and will steam vegetables at the same time.

While its not a Japanese style full functional steamer, the 4 cup Aroma ARC-914SBB seemed perfectly suited to making rice for a 1-2 person dinner, which was my original intent.

HOWEVER, the description is INCORRECT and does not in fact include a steaming tray, relegating it to just making rice. This is not at all what I wanted, and when I returned to double check the description, I noticed the price had also dropped. Maybe more people have complained?

Overall it seems like it'd be fine, making rice. My only other observation is how thin the stainless exterior seems, it wouldnt take much pressure to crease it is my impression.

In conclusion, there is no doubt it is a better rice maker than the cheap glass lid kind, however, my experience is not what one would call ideal, and as it stands, I cannot recommend this item.

Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker Review

Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow CookerNot normally one to write reviews, this is one time I felt compelled to put my two cents in. I thoroughly researched slow cookers and rice makers before deciding on the Sanyo ECJ-HC100S. I must say that this cooker is the smartest thing I've purchased in a very long time -- a great concept, nicely designed and very well made. It is incredibly easy to use and the heavy duty, non-stick bowls (not one, but two!) and lids are easy to clean. It's sleek and good-looking as well as nice and compact, considering its large capacity -- not bulky or cumbersome like most of the crockpot-type slow cookers out there. And what's better than having two products in one?!

The first thing I used it for was brown basmati rice, which I have never been able to successfully cook on the stovetop. I couldn't have been happier with the result; it was cooked to perfection as was every other type of rice that I've made since then. Just use the cup provided to measure out the rice and then add water to the appropriate line shown inside the bowl and you can't go wrong. Even porridge and steelcut oats come out perfect every time.

For me, the drawback to crockery cooking has always been the need to brown meat in a seperate pan on the stovetop. However, the Sanyo slow cooking bowl is metal with a non-stick interior and has both a high and low setting for slow cooking. Therefore, you can start out using the high setting to brown the meat and then add the rest of your ingredients and switch to low for the rest of the cooking process. A beautiful thing!

So far this item is worth every penny I paid for it. I found the best price online at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Sweeter yet, because I placed my order in person at my local BB&B store, they even accepted my store coupon for 20% off!

Hats off to Sanyo for a great product all around!

Zojirushi NHS-18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer & Warmer Review

Zojirushi NHS-18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer & WarmerI love my rice cooker and use it several times a week! But you need to wash your rice thoroughly before cooking. This will help with the "spitting water" problem the cooker has.
I enjoy using the steamer for kale, broccoli, cauliflower, or carrots. The only trick is learning when to put the veggies in while the rice is cooking so that the veggies don't overcook.
My brown rice tends to clump and stick on the bottom, even when the rice is washed. That's one problem that keeps me from rating this as a 5 star machine. The other problem is that the instruction booklet is poorly done.Brown rice needs to soak for 30 minutes before starting to cook.

Zojirushi NS-TGC18 10-Cup Micom Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi NS-TGC18 10-Cup Micom Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless SteelExcellent choice! I've purchased several rice cookers in the past. The last one I had was a Tiger Brand which I was very disappointed with. This by far was the best rice cooker I've ever had. We cook rice everyday and although it takes a little longer than the other brands I've used, the rice comes out "PERFECT" each time and does not get spoiled easily. One of the best feature is that you can actually see the measurement inside the pot.The pot in itself is heavy duty.
It's a little pricy but you get what you pay for and this Zojirushi is definitelyworth the money. It also has two different tunes when you initially press the cooking button and after it's done...very cute! We all love it and will definitely recommend to anyone.

Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating System, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi NP-HBC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating System, Stainless SteelWe purchased this rice cooker last week, and have used it twice for brown rice. The rice came out better (and with less effort on our part) than any other cooking method we've ever used.It was, in short, the best brown rice we'd ever had anywhere.

We also tried out the warming function, in which the machine keeps rice warm for up to 12 hours on normal warm mode--there's also an extended warm mode for up to 48 hours. After about 8 hours on warming mode, the rice was virtually the same as when it had just been cooked.

The machine could not be easier to use.Build and material quality appear first rate. The rice pan is heavy duty--same for the non-stick coating.Very quiet in operation, very easy to clean. All sorts of little details that suggest many cycles of refinement in the design.Aesthetics are delightfully Japanese. The stainless steel side and top panels appear as an afterthought designed to fit Western tastes.

One thing I haven't seen anyone else mention about Zojirushi rice cookers. On the last page in the owner's manual there's a footnote which suggests vaguely that this rice cooker may not function well at high altitude.Since I live in Santa Fe at 7,000 feet, I called Zojirushi USA and asked about this. They told me that their rice machines do not function well above 3,000 feet, and that I should return the machine I purchased.Well, instead, we tried it at better than double its supposed elevation limit, and as mentioned above, it worked perfectly--so it's hard to imagine that it might work MORE perfectly below 3,000 feet.Suffice it to say that if you live in Denver, Albuquerque or Santa Fe, you can ignore Zojirushi's disclaimers about poor function at higher elevation.

All in all, this is a superb product that combines the otherwise mutually exclusive benefits of perfect rice with set and forget automation. The folks at Zojirushi USA (aside from their apparent ignorance about cooking rice at altitude) are informative and friendly. We tend to buy the best kitchen equipment we can find just to avoid the hassles of unreliability.Accordingly, we're difficult to please, and this machine meets our (very high) standards.

LONG TERM USE UPDATE (January, 2009):
This machine has continued to function flawlessly.Apparently Zojirushi induction rice cookers aren't well known in northern New Mexico, since whenever we have a dinner party and rice is on the menu, our guests are always intrigued by this thing, and regularly end up buying one of their own.

One clarification:the cooking bowl is stainless steel, as is the inside cooking bowl cover. Apparently these parts tend to be aluminum on the vast majority of computerized rice cookers, even those from Zojirushi. The bowl is coated in some sort of very heavy duty anti-stick coating--after a year or two of use, the coating still looks new--it hasn't started flaking off at all.I would guess that boiling water (which is basically what rice cookers do) isn't too hard on the coating, and we're probably not poisoning ourselves, the way we might be if we used non-stick pans (which we don't).

Reference my comments above about Zojirushi rice cookers working perfectly at high elevation (which was news even to Zojirushi), I've since heard that high elevation performance may be better with induction rice cookers than with computerized rice cookers with standard heating elements.Who knows. What is definite, however, is that as of this writing this machine has functioned perfectly at 7,000 feet for almost two years.

Zojirushi NP-HBC18 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating System, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi NP-HBC18 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating System, Stainless SteelWe thought we knew what rice was supposed to be like when we used our Costco Aroma Rice Cookers--we would just, as a matter of course, replace the old ones with the same brand...Until this time.
After reading up on consumer reviews and Japanese sites, we opted to try the Zojirushi Induction Heating Rice Cooker. The stainless steel is STUNNING--the pictures do NOT do it justice--it is gorgeous on my countertop--a piece of furniture, like the KitchenAid Mixer. It is easy to set up (clock time, etc) and easy to use.(The directions are very clear.)I tried some Jasmine Rice in it for our first try--and WOW!I was totally amazed! Each piece of rice is perfect in every way.I have never had such results before.Perfect temperature, perfect texture, perfect stickiness, perfect taste. The aroma in the kitchen fills the house and it's wonderful.
There is very little steam (unlike most rice cookers) and it is very easy to clean up.It keeps the rice at that perfect temperature for hours--even longer with the extended warm feature.
I know it's expensive--but in this case, I truly believe you get what you pay for.If you want to know what rice is supposed to be like--you must get one of these!Zojirushi makes a couple of different types of rice cookers--and I have heard that they are all terrific. This one cooks with induction heating, which uses magnets...the unit doesn't get hot...
If you can--get this one!

Aroma ARC-737G 7-Cup Pot-Style Rice Cooker and Steamer Review

Aroma ARC-737G 7-Cup Pot-Style Rice Cooker and SteamerMy sister and I both own this rice cooker and it works great. My only suggestion is that it tends to make a mess of your countertop (steam creates a "coating" on countertop) but that can easily be resolved by putting a small dishtowel under the cooker during use. This cooker even cooks brown rice perfectly which I always found difficult to accomplish stovetop.I would purchase it again.

Zojirushi NS-TGC10 Micom 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi NS-TGC10 Micom 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless SteelJust got this rice cooker this afternoon & immediately tried it out making one "Zojirushi cup" of sticky short grain white rice I bought at a Japanese grocery store.I just finished gobbling it up with a little soy sauce and it was DELICIOUS!The rice came out perfectly - nice and sticky (I can't wait to make some sushi with it!), but not watery at all and cooked perfectly.

I was really torn between this model and Zojirushi's NS-LAC05 3-Cup model. Most of the time, I will be cooking rice for only 2 people, so the 3-Cup NS-LAC05 seemed ideal. But, on the other hand, I liked the flexibility of getting this bigger 5 1/2-Cup model - e.g., when having company over for dinner, or for cooking "one pot" rice-based dishes - I thought I could use the extra room in both cases. And, this bigger model can make cakes, where as the 3-Cup is too small. The only thing that worried me about getting this bigger model was I wondered if it would cook a small amount (i.e., one "Zojirushi cup") of plain rice as well as the smaller model - after all, that is what I would be doing most of the time.

Well, the flexibility won out in the end (as well as the surprisingly lower price of the NS-TGC10 on Amazon - $10 cheaper than the smaller NS-LAC05).And my worries about making a small amount of plain rice in the NS-TGC10 turned out to be unfounded as I discovered in my test run.

So, if you are torn between these two Zojirushi models, I recommend this one - $10 cheaper & more flexibilty.Plus, judging from the dimensions of both, it is not much bigger than the NS-LAC05 so it won't take up significantly more kitchen counter space.

Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker, White Review

Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker, WhitePurchased this rice cooker for my wife. We are both enjoying it a lot. The parts are solid and simply feel like high quality. There are two bowls. The rice cooking bowl has a better non-stick coating on it. The other bowl for non-rice cooking is easy enough to clean, but might take a little soaking for those challenging situations.

Selection is easy to understand. The slow-cook options are partially what sold me on this unit. You can cook so many things in this cooker, because you can manually cook instead of always having to follow a programmed option.

Rice can be kept warm up to 12 hours. It has a great sealing system, so it does stay fresh.

The unit looks very nice on the counter. The battery runs the clock, unless you keep the unit plugged into the outlet. The battery is suppose to run for 4 years or so.

Quality of rice cooked -- The rice has been PERFECT every time we have cooked rice. We are using a Jasmine rice bought from a local asian market. We simply wash the rice twice, put in the required amount of water, and set it to cook. So far it has been perfect each time.

I ended up buying this over the Zojirushi based on price and couldn't be happier. I saved maybe a $100 and am 100% happy with the product. We've been using this for 3 weeks now.

Cleaning is easy and fast. The removable lid/seal is great and easy to clean. It is not possible to latch the cover if the removable cover is not in place -- a nice feature and great engineering.

The steam collector works well. Be careful not to put your hand close to the exit hole as steam is not fully condensed coming out and could burn you. This is not really a safety concern for me and my wife. Cleaning the collector is not a problem so far. Simply remove and shake out the water. Any water dripping down is caught in a silicon seal. You can easily take a towl and soak up the very small amount of water that might drip out. It is only water and doesn't mess anything up.

I would buy this over again based on my experience so far. Can't speak about reliability yet. I can only hope Sanyo brand will be good. I don't usually buy their products.

Aroma ARC-998 16-Cup Cool Touch Digital Rice Cooker, Stainless Review

Aroma ARC-998 16-Cup Cool Touch Digital Rice Cooker, StainlessI purchased my Aroma rice cooker at Target as I love rice.I originally bid on a much more expensive one on ebay but was outbid even at $120.Anyhow, I was at Target, saw this one and thought...what the heck.I followed directions to make 4 cups of brown rice.I hit the brown rice button and that was it.One hour and 45 minutes later I ate what I consider to be the best brown rice I have ever had.It didn't stick together as you get at fine restaurants, and it was fluffy.I loved it!The best feature (I think) about this machine is that when your rice is cooked, it automatically switches over to keep warm setting. Therefore, you can never overcook it. If you undercook it it's only because you didn't allow it to cook for the time the instructions tell you to.I am now so glad that I purchased this one.I paid $35 for it versus the $120 I would have paid for the Zojirushi 3 cup rice cooker.

Aroma ARC-856 6-Cup Sensor Logic Digital Cool-Touch Rice Cooker and Food Steamer Review

Aroma ARC-856 6-Cup Sensor Logic Digital Cool-Touch Rice Cooker and Food SteamerI was considering buying a different rice cooker at twice the price, but bought the ARC-852 (a slightly smaller version of the ARC-856) instead when it was offered briefly at our local Sam's Club. I couldn't pass up the promise of "fuzzy logic" at well under $100, and it has not disappointed! It makes brown rice, long-grain white rice, short grain rice, sushi rice, calrose rice and every other variety of rice better than on the stovetop, and then keeps it warm until you're ready to eat.I've also made pilafs, paella, orzo, steamed vegetables and tofu, and other delicious meals in this rice cooker. However, I find that the real hidden value is in its ability to prepare perfect polenta without the stovetop mess. Here's how to do it:In the bowl of the rice cooker, sprinkle 1 part coarse grind cornmeal into 4 parts cold water or broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add butter or margarine, finely chopped onion and garlic, and other seasonings to taste.Close the lid and run the rice maker on the porridge cycle, stirring briefly every 15 minutes or so (repeat the porridge cycle, if necessary to extend cooking time). When polenta is thick and creamy, top with pasta sauce and Italian sausage, chili and cheese, cuban black beans and guacamole, or a simple pat of butter and sprinkle of parmesan. Chill the leftovers in a loaf pan and pan-fry in slices the next day...Incredible polenta with very little effort!

The non-stick pan cleans up beautifully, no scrubbing required, and it stores easily:the cord retracts, and the steamer rack, utensils, and measuring cup fit neatly inside the rice cooker. All around a great value!

Aroma ARC-733G 3-Cup Pot-Style Rice Cooker and Food Steamer Review

Aroma ARC-733G 3-Cup Pot-Style Rice Cooker and Food SteamerIt's a cheap, nice little rice cooker that just works. Here are some tips from the instruction manual:
1. This appliance is NOT dishwasher safe.Inner pot and accessories are NOT dishwasher safe.(i.e. that stuck-on rice that happens to every rice cooker at some point?yeah, don't try using your dishwasher to get it out.)
2. Always make sure the outside of the inner pot is dry prior to use.If inner cooking pot is returned when wet, it may damage this product, causing it to malfunction.

Also, interestingly, it's pretty much a disposable appliance unfortunately. That is, for the fifteen bucks you buy it for here on Amazon (esp. if you have Prime shipping for free), if it breaks, you can return it to the manufacturer, but Aroma Housewares Company [...]for shipping and handling charges.

I also find one other instruction particularly interesting: "Do not use the appliance for other than its intended use."Take that, Jack Bauer.

Black & Decker 3 Cups Uncooked Yields 6 Cups Cooked, Rice CookerI am very impressed with this rice cooker. Many of the reviews for other brands were not very encouraging.I thought that Black and Decker has never let me down, so I gave it a shot.I measure exactly as directed on the instructions and the rice comes out perfect.I even substitute broth for the water and add my own blends of spices based on my cravings that particular evening. The cleanup is fantastic.I am going to buy one for my daughter and grandson this Christmas. We have used this cooker about 12 times now and the results are consistent. Please note the smaller size of this unit if you cook very large amounts of rice at one time.
**I have now owned this cooker for 7 months and am still amazed at how well it works. It remains so easy to clean up even after using it about 2-3 times per week.It has always produced perfect rice. And, that is even when I add lots of different items for a variety of rice dishes.

Zojirushi 6 Cup Rice Cooker / Steamer Review

Zojirushi 6 Cup Rice Cooker / SteamerI love my rice cookers. I use them not only to make rice, but for all sorts of one-pot meals. Put in a cup of rice, vegetables, meats or seafood, seasonings, tofu... and a half hour later you have a steaming hot one-pot meal. They're also good for pilafs and other grain dishes.
The Zojirushi and Panasonic units are all first rate, BUT you need to know a little something about cooking rice beyond what's in the poorly worded manuals.
Different rice takes different amounts of water. The long-grained rice Americans are used to should be cooked with 1-3/4 cup of water for each cup of rice. Japanese rice needs only 1-1/4 cup of water for each cup of rice, or 1 cup of water for each cup of washed, wet, rice.
Many Americans (and Europeans) have problems with these cookers because the measure ments are calibrated for Japanese short grain rice, and the Westerners are cooking long grain rice. Get the ratios correct, and everything works out fine.
I've had a number of rice cookers of different sizes. My Panasonic has lasted over 20 years, and my Zojirushi looks like it'll last just as long, while my South Bend gave up the ghostafter only a year. Go with the top Japanese models; they're made for day-in and day out cooking.

Oster 4722 3-Cups Uncooked/6-Cup Cooked Rice Cooker with Steaming Tray, Red Review

Oster 4722 3-Cups Uncooked/6-Cup Cooked Rice Cooker with Steaming Tray, RedI've never owned a rice cooker before this, however, I have cooked lots of rice over the years. Its an inexpensive rice cooker and if you follow the directions, it'll do fine.

Since moving to the mountains of Colorado, its taken me years to adjust to the lowered the boiling point due to the higher elevation (8300')... it takes more time (add ~10-20min) and the dry climate means using more water (for a 1 cup of dry rice, takes ~2.5+ cups water rather than 2cups). Still, there have been many times when rice just didn't work out the way I wanted.

So I mentioned that it would be nice to have a rice cooker and let it deal with the cook time. Of course I had done some research, and when this came in the mail as a present, I was a little nervous since Oster's seem to get so-so reviews. Well, I cooked my typical basmati rice, a 1/2 cup dry and added my typical 1c water plus extra, put lid on, pressed the button and went to do something else.

A lot of reviewers mention how the rice on the bottom gets over-cooked, sometimes brown or burnt. Some reviewers like the crunchiness, some hate it. Well, the directions tell you to stir the rice - especially the bottom of the cooker after 15 minutes. Sure enough, the rice at the bottom was starting to stick. I scraped it all loose, added another 1/4 cup water, chopped it up a little, put the lid on, and let fate take its course. Would the rice by a burnt mess? 20 minutes later we had the best sticky rice we've ever had!

Plus it seemed to cook faster. And I really liked that it went to 'warm' mode automatically. One major drawback: It spewed hot sticky water up under the lid and through the vent all over the kitchen but once we wiped the lid off (without picking up the lid), it settled down. If you are a neat freak or want a set-and-forgot, this rice cooker is not for you. And for me, I'll come up with a little steam catcher helmet and deal with the mess. For the price, its a good buy. And, I love the red color too!

[found this cool tip from Spyce: To help keep the starch from bubbling up and spraying out of the vent hole, rinse the rice thoroughly and drain. Heat a small amount of olive oil in the rice bowl, once the oil is heated, carefully add the rice and saute it for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water and continue cooking.] I'm going to try this tip next time!

BTW, this cooker seems like a knock-off of the similar Rival rice cooker (both owned by Jarden]

Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 5-1/2-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer, Premium White Review

Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 5-1/2-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer, Premium WhiteI finally convinced my wife to replace the old but still functional single switch rice cooker I'd owned for about 10 years. I have longed for something with an off switch so rice doesn't burn to the bottom when I forget to unplug it. This guy was the ticket.

It seems like a fairly complex machine but its really easy to use once you understand the setup. Its well designed. The pot is easy to clean and the inner lid snaps off for easy cleaning as well.

I have to say the rice it produces is some of the best I have had. I did a side by side cookoff with the old and the new rice cookers. The same rice just seemed to have more consistant texture and better strong flavor. Definatley worth the upgrade since we do lots of rice.

The one drawback I found is with the somewhat misleading specifications. They say this is a "5 cup" rice cooker. So I'm thinking 5 cups=40oz. Plenty big enough for a family of 4. Well its not quite that much. It seems in Asia (on the metric system) their idea of a cup is a teacup. If you look at the picture and see the two little cups next to the machine, it will hold 5 of THOSE cups. Those cups are approximatley 6oz each. So really it is a 4 (American) cup rice cooker, not 5. Of course 3/4 of a cup is about how much rice you'll eat in a meal so one run of this machine should be able to produce rice for 5. If you need more that that consider the NS-ZAC18 10 cup (8 cup) model.

The trick to the machine is to use the little cups that come with it. You measure out a few "cups" of rice and dump it into the pot. Then you add water and fill it up to the graduated mark on the inside of the pot. So if you toss in 2 cups you add water until you hit the 2 cup mark. It has different markings for Brown, White and Sushi rice.

Before discovering the proper way of using the smaller "cups" I used a regular 8oz cup on some Jasmine rice (then filled it to the designated level). It still came out way better than my rice cooker. It was firm but not hard and full of flavor. So if you screw up or loose your little "cup" you can still get great rice as long as the stickness is not absolutely critical to the receipe.

The manual makes a huge deal out of its ability to handle some "no rinse" rice who's milling technology was proudly developed in Japan. They devote pages to the setting and cooking it, but actually its pretty similar to the regular rice, you just use the green cup instead of the clear cup.

All in all this is a great little machine. If you want the best and are willing to pay the bucks this is the one to get. You will not feel your money is wasted.

Update:
Its now 6 years later and countless batches of rice and this little thing is still going strong. The pot has a few scratches from years of continous daily use but its holding up.

We expanded our use of this little gem. I've learned not to think of it as just a rice producing device but as a rice cooker + modified crock pot. My wife started using it to produce porriage and then later soup. She'll pour the ingredients in the night before, set the timer and her breakfast is ready 30 minutes before she wakes up. You can use it for grain soups, porriage, oatmeal and more. We buy packs of Thai flavored rice that say were supposed to cook on the stove. We dump the stuff in and hit go. They come out plenty tastey.

There is a quick cooking cycle that we use a lot. Shaves about 20 minutes off the cook time. Flavor suffers a little (though its still great) but when your in a rush...

Perhaps the most amazing thing however is what it does to brown rice. As a kid I was never fond of brown rice. Too hard and crunch and I was never that big on bran flavor. We got some brown rice and started cooking it in this thing and it was a whole new world. I don't know how it did it but it came out soft, a little chewey and decent tasting. Brown rice was now something worth eating vs avoiding.

So if for whatever reason you are looking to switch to brown rice but not thrilled with the flavor do yourself a favor and get one of these units. It makes it a whole new experience.

We haven't tried steaming anything yet. Maybe when our steamer breaks..

Zojirushi Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless SteelMy wife and I became busy recently and decided it was time to finally get a rice cooker to save some time in the kitchen. We bought a cheap old-school rice cooker and the rice would scorch, water would boil out of lid, and the rice was worse than cooking the rice on the stove top.

Then we decided to invest in a good rice cooker.

The Zojirushi NS-LAC05 is everything we hoped for and more.We wanted a rice cooker that would make great rice, that could handle smaller amounts of rice, that had a timer, and could handle a variety of different rices.

This rice cooker is a dream.
-It's attractive. We've already received compliments from guests.
-Its footprint is very reasonable for a small kitchen.
-With a thick, stick proof bowl the rice doesn't burn to any spot and clean up is simple.
-It easily makes rice for 2 adults (1.5 of the "cups" for us) but could handle 4 adults (3 "cups") with normal eating habits.Note: the cups aren't full size cups of rice.
-It does a great job on a variety of rices; there are different settings for different rices and the measurement markings appear correct for different rices. So far we've tried long grain brown, medium grain brown, sushi, jasmine, white basmati, brown basmati, and brown/white mixes. We haven't had a bad batch of rice.
-The computer's fuzzy logic algorithm (i.e. "Micom Neuro Fuzzy") constantly adjusts the temperature so the rice comes out perfect every time.I also think the cooker starts out at a low temperature and gradually steps up the heat but I'm not 100% sure.
-The heavy bowl seems to distribute heat perfectly and there's no scorched rice or crust attached to the bowl.
-The timer is convenient for setting the rice to be completed at a specific time, at which point it keeps your rice warm. We've found it completes cooking within a minute or two of the timer setting. There are two timer settings that you can adjust...presumably so you could have your rice prepared for breakfast & dinner in Japan.
-The retractable cord is a nice feature.
-There's even a little holder for the included rice paddle that attaches to the side of the cooker.

We've even used it to make Polenta.Just use 1 Zojirushi-cup of corn grits, chicken broth up to 2-cup brown rice mark, and cook using the white rice setting. When it's done, put the mixture in a bowl and let it cool to room temperature.

I'd highly recommend this rice cooker. It's probably not big enough for a big family but for a single person, a couple, or a small family it will probably fit the bill perfectly.I can't over-emphasize the quality of rice the cooker produces...it's like a dream having rice as good or better than a restaurant at home.We probably eat grain cooked in this machine 6-7 nights a week.Once you switch to this Zojirushi you'll never want to go back to your old ways.

Panasonic SRG06FG 3.3-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker Review

Panasonic SRG06FG 3.3-Cup Automatic Rice CookerThis is a really great, basic rice cooker. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of the more expensive rice cookers (no warming feature, no different settings, etc.), but it works well for cooking rice, it's compact, and reasonably priced. Prior to buying this one, we had another basic model made by another company that broke. We replaced with an identical one, and it broke as well. After going through two rice cookers, we decided to pay $5 more to get a different brand- this Panasonic. We have had no problems with it, and we also like the non-stick pot. With our old rice cooker, the rice would stick to the bottom of the pot, so we couldn't eat all of it. The Panasonic doesn't have this problem, so we can make smaller quantities of rice without wasting most of it. I have made white rice, brown rice, and quinoa in the rice cooker, and all have turned out well.

Black & Decker RC3303 3-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker Review

Black & Decker RC3303 3-Cup Automatic Rice CookerEver since I purchased this item, I've been using it almost every single day!It is extremely convenient and is a snap to use.I live in a small apartment and this is the perfect size for one person.I always cook 1 cup of uncooked rice and it is a hearty serving for one person. It is very easy to measure all your ingredients because the non-stick bowl has marked lines on the inside (1 cup, 2 cup, and 3 cup) to show you how much water to add.Clean-up is a breeze because of the non-stick bowl.

My favorite rice to make is jasmine rice with lots of lime juice, a little lemon juice, and cilantro.I add the rice to the non-stick bowl (1 cup uncooked). Then I add enough lime juice so that all of the rice is wet and soaking in it.Then I add just a little bit of lemon juice (1-2 tsp.).Then add a bit of butter and some salt. After rice is cooked, mix in 2 tsp. of cilantro and stir well. It's delicious and it's the only rice I ever make.

The only problem with this unit is that you have to check the rice occasionally during the cooking phase, otherwise the bottom of the rice will brown. It's not a catastrophe and is easily remedied.First off, let me just say that if the rice browns a bit, it only looks unpleasant. It still tastes just as good.To avoid this, you need to wait until the rice has absorbed almost all the water.Take off the lid and stir the rice thoroughly.Once the rice has absorbed most of the water, just switch the mode to "keep warm" manually (instead of waiting for it to click). Then occasionally stir the rice while you wait around 5-10 minutes (give or take).Once the rice has absorbed all the water, you can leave it on "keep warm".I like to switch the mode back to "cook" for around 3-4 minutes so that the rice gets nice and hot.The trick is to take it out before it browns the bottom. This sounds complicated, but it really is not.Just check it occasionally, stir it a few times, then switch it to "keep warm" just before all the water is absorbed (95% or so should be absorbed). This is the only flaw with this unit (hence only 4 stars).Otherwise, I think it is fantastic and it is my new favorite kitchen appliance!

Aroma ARC-838TC 8-Cup Digital Cool-Touch Rice Cooker and Food Steamer Review

Aroma ARC-838TC 8-Cup Digital Cool-Touch Rice Cooker and Food SteamerThis is the fourth rice cooker I have owned and it is by far and away the best. The rice cooks right every time. The manual does give a guide of how much water to add for different types of rice but I have found that even when I screw up and do not use the right amount of water the rice has turned out pretty good.

I enjoy the fact that the device has a sealed top which really seems to help the rice be more consistent and also makes me feel better having this unit used with three small children in the house running around. The rice receptacle inside is a delightful non-stick surface that is more then easy to clean. The steam feature for other items works wonderful as well.I have left rice in the device for over two hours after cooking and it is still moist, tasty and not burnt. The one touch button cooking is a breeze and for me it takes about 30 minutes or so in most instances for the quantity I cook.

The only thing I learned I had to do is not place the device under anything when cooking. There is a starchy steam that is released during cooking that can coat wood and other surfaces. On wood this starch coating can be a pain to remove.

This is a great device to cook an entire meal or side in quick mindless ease.I can't think of a feature I would change on this unit.A great device that actually has increased the amount of rice and vegetables I and my family consume.Unless you need larger quantities of rice then this device is capable of I really can't see why anyone would need anything else. This is a great product at a great price.Wonderful!
